New international fund for the Baltic Sea environment is established

2009-05-18 | Sweden and Finland are the first countries to establish a fund for a better environment in the Baltic Sea.

”Nordic Investment Bank”, NIB and ”Nordic Environment Finance Corporation ”, NEFCO, previously suggested that a dedicated environment fund for the Baltic Sea ought to be established. Sweden and Finland have now both contributed and the fund can start to operate.

The first year there will be 50 MSEK in the fund but it is expected to get more funding the coming years. The fund is a result of Sweden’s and Finland’s work to implement their commitments under the “Baltic Sea Action Plan” which has been decided within HELCOM. Money from the fund will be used to support the launch of local and regional projects aimed at improving the marine environment.
