Enhanced prevention of pollution from maritime transport (WP4)

The maritime field is regulated by conventions and regulations. However, the level of inforcement varies around the Baltic Sea. WP 4 will look into the existing legal framework regulating maritime pollution and raise the question what can be done within this framework to prevent further pollution from maritime transport.

Ports play an important role in the work of preventing pollution from ships. One of the major activities in WP 4 will be to investigate the possibilities of finding common solutions of waste management in port an on board vessels.

Another important issue in pollution prevention is the classification of the Baltic Sea as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA). This is an already existing framework that needs to be completed with additional protective measures in order to be fully empowered.

Major activities and outcomes of WP 4

  • Research brief on maritime conventions regulating pollution from maritime transport
  • Common ways of treatment of ship generated waste
  • Suggestions of protective measures within the PSSA framework
