Bihar is a sacred land with several pilgrimage spots dedicated to different faiths followed in India. Mahabodhi Temple and Buddhist Monasteries is the first thing that comes into mind when talking of Bihar pilgrimage. However, Bihar has much more than the iconic Buddhism. The land is home to people of all religion. The state shows commendable religious tolerance.

Listed below are four most popular pilgrimage sites in Bihar which you must visit:


Mahabodhi Temple

This temple is celebrated as the main shrine for Buddhist pilgrims all across the globe. Mahabodhi Temple is located in Bodhgaya and had served as an integral part of a Buddhist's life since the rule of Emperor Ashoka. The emperor installed this site Ashoka Pillar, his trademark pillar and a stone railing during the 1st century AD. A part of this stone railing still exists. The present age Mahabodhi Temple structure covered many times by Bihar news and media was originally constructed during the second century. With the passage of time, several changes and additions were also made to the temple. This is how it acquired the famous shape you see now. Its recognition as a World heritage Site in 2002 by UNESCO added to its global fame and glory. The main structure of the temple is spread across an area of 45 square meters and rises to a height of around 54 meters above ground. You can see beautiful carvings on the exteriors of temple depicting scenes from the life of Lord Buddha. A gigantic image of Lord Buddha is installed here. This image depicts Lord Buddha touching the earth with his right hand. Temple courtyard houses several stupas scattered in almost all directions.

The famous Bodhi Tree is located adjacent to the temple. It is believed that the tree is a distant side-shoot of the original Bodhi Tree under which the Lord attained enlightenment. Emperor Ashoka destroyed the original tree prior to his conversion to Buddhism.

Sher Shah Suri Masjid

This elaborate mosque was constructed by Sher Shah Suri in the year 1540. He wanted to commemorate his reign and victory by unveiling this magnanimous structure. Presently, the Masjid serves as a prominent landmark in Patna city and one of the most significant Mosques in Bihar. Sher Shah Suri Masjid provides us a deep insight into the grandeurs of Afghan architecture. Its unparalleled beauty has turned it into a masterpiece. The mosque houses a tomb covered with an octagonal slab made from stone. A large dome in the center is surrounded by 4 smaller ones. Its location in the center of Patna makes it accessible from anywhere in the city.

Harmandir Sahib

The famous Gurudwara is the birth place Shri Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th and the last Sikh Guru. Situated in the Chowk area of Patna, this is one of the most significant places of worship for the Sikh community. The site is also referred to as Patna Sahib. The Gurudwara houses many sacred relics belonging to Shri Guru Gobind Singh. Some of these items sacred sword of the Guru, a 'Pangura' (cradle) plated in gold with four stands, a pair of his sandals, and four iron arrows. A book containing the written rules stated by Guru Gobind Singh and Guru Tegh Bahadur is also on display. It is revered as a sacred book in Sikh Religion.

Pathar Ki Masjid

This pilgrimage spot was built by Parvezsah, in the year 1621. Parvezsah was the son of Jehangir. Also referred to as Sanji Masjid, Chimmi Ghat Mosque, and Saif Khan's Mosque, Pathar Ki Masjid is an exquisite marvel located right next to Harmandirji alongside the River Ganga. 

Bihar is a sacred place for not just one, but all religions. There is at least one Pilgrimage site belonging to all religions that make Bihar among the holiest places in India and a must visit for all pilgrims. And the beauty and grandeur of these places make them a wonderful place to tour as well.
